  • A coach or partner will hit the ball to your side. As soon as the ball crosses the net, quickly pivot to face it and react to the play.
  • Transition into an offensive position by setting up for a spike or a set.
  • Repeat this drill several times, gradually increasing the speed of the hits.

  • Focus on your footwork; ensure you’re always on the balls of your feet for quick reactions.

Cone Drill for Lateral Movement

How to Complete the Drill:

  • Place five cones in a straight line, each about 5 feet apart.
  • Start at one end of the line and shuffle laterally from cone to cone, touching the top of each cone as you go.
  • After reaching the last cone, sprint back to the start and repeat the drill for several repetitions.

  • Keep your knees slightly bent and your hips low for better stability.
  • Focus on quick foot movements rather than long strides to maximize speed.

Pass and Transition Drill

This drill combines passing with quick movement to teach you how to transition from defense to offense fluidly. It enhances teamwork and communication, too.

How to Complete the Drill:

  • Partner up and position yourselves about 10 feet apart.
  • One player starts with the ball and passes it to their partner.
  • After making the pass, the player immediately sprints to the net or a designated spot for a set or spike.
  • The partner catches the ball and either sets or spikes it back to the original player.

  • Focus on accurate passing to facilitate a smooth transition.
  • Emphasize communication with your partner about when to move.
